This feature celebrates two decades of coverage of the transformation underway in India’s digital solutions industry. When PW first began covering the industry in 2006, widely known then as “content services,” the buzz was all about content conversion and e-deliverables and the relative merits of print-centric versus content-centric workflows.

Content mobility as a concept—think, e-books, e-learning, and mobile apps—was barely on the horizon. Discussions of accessibility, cloud technologies, discoverability, and modular publishing platforms were barely breaking ground. The world knew only desktops with bookmarked PDFs marketed as e-books.

By 2015, with laptops and mobile devices gaining popularity, the attention—and topics du jour—turned toward developing agile, customized, discoverable, integrated, intuitive, mobile, and scalable content. Today, robust processes, innovative tools, and intuitive and dynamic workflows are must-haves for vendors in India and elsewhere. It is all about content neutrality, reusability, and multiplicity with a view toward combating content obsolescence. Content now needs to be accessible to everyone everywhere all the time. The distribution of content has shifted from mainstream to direct-to-consumer, becoming more platform- and app-based and increasingly a digital-only reader experience. Accessibility requirements and AI applications will only speed up the content digitization process.

If previously UI and UX were fodder for watercooler conversations, they are now about UD—Universal Design, that is, “design for all”—which aims to create products and environments that meet the needs of people with diverse abilities. While UD is currently used primarily within the building and construction space, its principles of diversity, inclusivity, and usability are equally applicable to content and publishing.
