After it outsourced its distribution and logistics services beginning in 2010, HarperCollins is reversing course, announcing plans to build a new 1.6 million sq. ft. “supply chain logistics facility” in Brownsburg, Ind., which it hopes to open in 2028.
In its announcement, HC said that its revenue nearly doubled over the last 15 years, which it attributed to both organic growth and acquisitions, including deals for Thomas Nelson, Harlequin, and HMH Media. The company expects the facility to create more than 400 supply chain logistics jobs while also helping it improve efficiency, enhance fulfillment accuracy, reduce waste, and increase visibility and control over the supply chain.
“HarperCollins has experienced significant transformation and growth over the last 15 years, and now is the time to expand our North American footprint,” said Brian Murray, HC president and CEO in a statement. “This state-of-the-art facility is an investment in our authors, our customers, and the future of our business.” One area that is likely to see growth is HC's third party distribution business, an area that has boosted sales for the other Big Five publishers. HC currently has a few clients, but that number is likely to grow when the new facility is completed.
