AP to Slash Weekly Book Reviews

The Associated Press will stop publishing its weekly book reviews effective September 1, Anthony McCartney, the AP’s global entertainment and lifestyle editor, announced in a message to freelance contributors. McCartney attributed the decision to a lack of reader interest, saying the AP can “no longer sustain the time it takes to plan, coordinate, write and edit reviews.” Moving forward, the AP will only publish book coverage by staffers. There have been no changes to AP staff.

The decision will deal a blow to smaller newspapers, which have widely syndicated the AP’s book reviews in the absence of coverage of their own.
